Health Update: SSRIs Don’t Cure Depression with Rev. Fred Shaw Jr.
Rev. Fred Shaw Jr., Director of Public Affairs and Spokesperson for the Citizens Commission on Human RIghts International, explains how every year 15.6 billion dollars are made selling the idea that depression is simply the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain. So then adding the right chemicals back into the brain should solve the problem, right? Unfortunately, this is not the case.
In an article titled “A Decisive Blow to the Serotonin Hypothesis of Depression” the College of London reviewed seventeen major studies published over several decades and found no convincing evidence to support the chemical imbalance theory on depression. It is purely theory, and it is not based on scientific evidence of any real chemical imbalance occurring in the brain.
What’s more, there is a very profitable multi-billion dollar industry that’s driving the push of psychotropic drugs such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on the population. Despite zero evidence that depression is caused by low serotonin levels, psychiatrists continue prescribing SSRIs as their primary form of treatment. Sadly, these SSRI psychotropic drugs act like “chemical straitjackets” as they warp one’s personality, changing the character of who they are. Other negative effects of SSRIs include suicide and dependence on other drugs that contribute to greater depression.
