Fernando de Rojas nació en La Puebla de Montalbán alrededor de 1470 en el seno de una familia de judíos conversos, y murió en 1541. Escribió 'La Celestina', cuya primera versión conocida apareció en 1499 con el título de 'Comedia de Calisto y Melibea', ampliada unos años más tarde como 'Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea', que podría haberse editado por primera vez en 1502.
