(TO MY AUDIENCE : PLEASE EXCUSE SOME OF THE BOO BOO WORDS ON THE SHOW THANK YOU.) Life at Cabrini Greens projects was rough. It was a tough life as a child living in one of the toughest and most dangerous projects in Chicago. Life in these Chicago housing projects was not fun in any sense. This area was a haven for gang violence. Specifically because many of the Cabrini- Green buildings were deserted. Living in gang territory means violence, murder, drugs, guns, and brokenness. What was the failure of Cabrini-Green?
CHA failed to budget money to repair buildings and maintain landscaping as they deteriorated. Cabrini-Green's reputation for crime and gangs rivaled Little Hell's. The murders of two white police officers in 1970 and seven-year-old resident Dantrell Davis 1992 drew national attention.
Author Tyrone Malone grew up in these projects. He had a hard-working mother and father. But with Dad not living there and always working and on the road, he became hooked to the streets at a young age, selling drugs and carrying a gun. His story talks about a hard knock life and how he changed his life for the better.
