Unlocking Insights: Navigating self- harm in Autistic children
In this episode, Szilvi explores the complexities of the sensitive topic of self-harming in autistic children from a play therapy perspective with Naomi Moore, an experienced play and creative arts therapist and clinical supervisor.
Before we dive into this profound discussion, we want to emphasise that self-harm is a sensitive topic. We encourage our listeners to approach this episode with mindfulness and sensitivity.
Naomi Moore's wealth of experience spans various settings, from primary and secondary schools to special schools and private practice. She has been a leader in the weekend volunteer program at Great Ormond Street Hospital for six years, providing play and creative activities for sick children and their families. Prior to that, Naomi volunteered for four years and worked at the Red Cross Children's Hospital in South Africa. Her professional interests are diverse and impactful, encompassing the emotional well-being of neurodivergent children in mainstream education, children with complex needs and medical conditions, the dynamics of siblings, self-harm, eating disorders, trauma, and dissociation. Additionally, she imparts her knowledge as part of the Wellbeing faculty at the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education, for the Sunflower Network, and Jigsaw Academy.
As we navigate this sensitive area, you'll gain profound insights into the emotional worlds of autistic children dealing with self-harming behaviours, and also discover how play therapy can offer a compassionate and transformative pathway to healing.
