112 - Surah Ikhlas “Sincerity” the 112th Surah of the Qur’an | Recitation
Surah Ikhlas (Arabic text: الْإِخْلَاص) is the 112th Surah of the Qur’an. It is titled in English “Sincerity” and composed of 4 verses.
The other surahs of the Qur’an are often named after something that is mentioned in it. Surah Ikhlas is one of two surahs where its name is not derived from the content but instead describes the main theme or subject matter of the Surah. Here the message is of Tawhid or the oneness of Allah. Whoever truly understands the message of tawhid in combination with sincerity and purity will rid themselves of shirk and indicate being among those saved. In the hadith of Sahih Bukhari 5015, it mentions Surah Ikhlas as being equal to a third of the Qur’an.
Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: The Prophet (ﷺ) said to his companions, “Is it difficult for any of you to recite one-third of the Qur’an in one night?” This suggestion was difficult for them so they said, “Who among us has the power to do so, O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)?” Allah Apostle replied: “Allah (the) One, the Self-Sufficient Master Whom all creatures need.’ Surat Al-Ikhlas is equal to one-third of the Qur’an.” It is also believed that Surah Ikhlas shares a close connection with Surah Kafirun.
Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA): The Prophet (peace be upon him) recited Surah al-Kafirun and Surat al-Ikhlas in the two (voluntary) Rak’at of the Fajr (prayer). [Reported by Muslim]. The message of Surah Kafirun is a rejection of falsehood whereas Surah Ikhlas provides an affirmation of the truth.
