Cliff is talking with Peevy about Jenny. Cliff is under the impression that Jenny is only interested in movie stars.
“She doesn’t care about them phoney baloneys – she cares about you!” says Peevy.
“But I want her to think I’m making something of myself, Peev,” says Cliff. “Not that I’m just an out-of-work pilot with holes in his pockets.”
“You’ve got a good thing going on with that girl, Clifford,” says Peevy, “but if she flies the coop, I’m telling you right now: it’s going to be your fault!”
Cliff looks at Peevy. “Aw, what do you know about women, Peev? You’ve haven’t a date since 1932!” Clifford gets up from the table.
Peevy has a wistful look in his eye. “Flora Maxwell,” says Peevy, sighing. “There was no point in dating nobody after her.” Peevy makes a pencil mark on the metal box and begins cutting the box with a hacksaw.
Early the next morning, a rooster crows. Peevy is asleep in a living room chair. Cliff, yawning, walks out of the bedroom, tying the sash on his robe. There’s an object covered by an oil cloth on the kitchen table. Cliff lifts the cloth off the object. It’s a gold helmet.
