Static Stretches, Taking Bets that It's Not, YES NOT a Good Warm Up!
Performing warm-ups prior to any physical exertion or activity or sport increases blood flow, joint/ muscle temperature and contributes to an enhanced perceived sense of well being. Static Stretching increases range of motion of the joints and is effective for the maintenance of joint health independent of any activities or exertion. Surprisingly, research and practical experience prove that static stretching (alone) as a warm-up activity may temporarily decrease muscle strength, muscle power, and exercise performance. A combination of dynamic (movement) activity related warm ups and stretching (both static and dynamic) have been shown in research to help one prepare for physical activity. The state of the nervous system is key. The brain must be warmed up, just not the muscles! Dr. Fred Clary, founder of Functional Analysis Chiropractic Technique and lifting and life coach and gym chalk covered philosopher opens a conversation on static stretching for warm ups and the fact that the brain comes first!
