Moment of Meditation: Barabbas (Matthew 27:15-16)
''Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. (Matthew 27:15-16)''
Continuing the irony of Jesus' Passion, Barabbas is offered to be released instead of Jesus. Barabbas. "Son of the Father" in Aramaic. He is released instead of Jesus. The Son of God.
Two sons are offered to you this morning. Both call themselves "Son of the Father." One is a notorious murderer and seditionist. The other is a compassionate teacher and preacher. Whom do you choose?
The world quickly agrees to Barabbas. He is the most like us. He is the picture of our sinfulness. He reflects his father's unrighteousness.
Jesus is foreign to us. He is the picture of perfection. He reflects His Father's holiness.
Barabbas was released because of man's sinfulness. Jesus was killed for man's sinfulness. But not only that. Jesus was killed to give you His righteousness. Righteousness that allows you to also be a son or daughter of your heavenly Father. A holy child of the heavenly King. Sins forgiven. Eyes lifted towards Heaven. Waiting for the Son's return. Amen.
