W.H. Hudson, Birds and Man, Chapter 1, Birds At Their Best, Part 3. This first chapter ends with the sentiment that our life’s memories of nature we experienced may be our greatest peace. It is an exuberant and proud accounting of the over 200 bird descriptions and bird songs W.H. Hudson can remember from his distant homeland of Argentina and his reasons why. He also answers the question: “What is the charm which you find or say you find in nature?” and imagines how wonderful it would be to be able to magically transport his mind’s beautiful visions of all the birds he has seen “at their best” into the mind of the other… “the unimaginable loveliness, the sunlit color, the grace of form and of motion…” This first chapter ends with the sentiment that our life’s memories of nature we experienced may be our greatest peace.
“‘What asketh man to have?’ cried Chaucer, and goes on to say in bitterest words that ‘now with his love" he must soon lie in "the coldë grave—alone, withouten any companie.‘ What he asketh to have, I suppose, is a blue diamond—some unattainable good; and in the meantime, just to go on with, certain pleasant things which perish in the using.” W.H. Hudson
