Dr. Bill Connell discusses "The Republic of the Church," the first history of the Catholic Church written by a layperson. All of the early histories of the church from the three hundreds up until this writer, in 1541, were written by priests. According to Dr. Connell, it can be called the first modern history of the church. Dr. Connell is Seton Hall's La Motta Chair of Italian Studies and specializes in medieval and early modern intellectual history.
