Did you know April is International Black Women’s History Month?
Sha Battle established April as International Black Women's History Month in 2016 in the city of Atlanta to uplift and support the achievements of Black women, and to build understanding and awareness of the contributions of Black women to the world. She was interested in creating something historic that would uplift Minority Women, so she created the Black Women In Jazz & The Arts Awards, and created March as International Black Women In Jazz & The Arts Month. Sha recounts seeing the same Black women celebrated during Black History Month and Women’s History Month. While researching for the Back Women in Jazz & the Arts Award, she discovered many little-known facts about Black women. Sha chose April to ensure Black women had a full month of recognition.
Today Sha is on a mission to get more states to adopt April as Black Women’s History Month. Thanks to Delegate Josh Cole, HJ 8 was signed into law in the state of Virginia and designates April 2024 and each succeeding year thereafter as Black Women’s History Month. Cincinnati, OH established April as Black Women’s History Month in 2023. Show your support by advocating to have your city or state formally recognize Black Women’s History Month.
