Our special guest today is Mick Foster, a saxophonist, clarinettist and composer who has worked with John Dankworth, Stan Sulzmann and Mike Garrick, The Humphrey Lyttelton Band, The London Philharmonic Orchestra, Dame Cleo Laine, Jacqui Dankworth, Guy Barker, Digby Fairweather, Swing Out Sister and the BBC Concert Orchestra, to name a few. Mick has recorded three albums under his own name and his session work credits include Predator, The Penguins Of Madagascar, Strictly Come Dancing and Downton Abbey.
Your host Natalia Farran and Mick Foster discuss some of the greatest jazz arrangers of all time. You will hear some of Mick’s compositions, from classical to jazz, as well as some uplifting Dixieland with Mick playing with local legends Digby Fairweather and Dave Hackbridge Johnson.
Which is Mick’s favourite saxophone? What’s the relationship between the instrument you choose to play and your speaking voice? Who is Miles Evans? Tune in to find out!
We also discuss the differences between UK and US jazz, what’s cooking in today’s jazz scene and listen to a few more vocalists, continuing from last month’s fascinating conversation with Simon Spillett.
