Irish hauliers and exporters could face mountains of red tape, draconian rules and increased costs because of a failure to reach agreement on draft EU transport laws.
That’s the warning from the Midlands North-West MEP Marian Harkin. She’s referring to the EU’s proposed road transport rules included in the Mobility Package.
On Wednesday MEPs rejected proposed amendments to the “Mobility Package” road haulage reform proposals. MEPs rejected the European Parliament's Transport Committee’s proposals on posting of workers, driving and rest time rules and deliveries within another EU state known as cabotage.
They’ve now referred them back to the Transport Committee for reconsideration. Some organisations and MEPs welcomed the vote. However, Marian Harkin says she fears it could have a detrimental impact on Irish hauliers and exporters.
