In 1988, Paul McCartney was asked to write a piece to commemorate The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra's 150th Anniversary. Composed with the help of Carl Davis, the eight movement Oratorio premiered in June of 1991. In the audience that evening was Allan Kozinn; whom was the classical arts writer for the New York Times. He was there to review the performance.
