I think the far right is empowered by the far left (and vice versa). I think that populism has increased as a reaction to far left movements. My understanding was that the Nazis were heavily funded by western capitalists who feared a Communist takeover in Germany. Here is my (non-rhetorical) question: had fascism not taken over, would a roughly equally oppressive Communist regime not taken over?

Thankfully, universities have stopped pushing politically motivated pseudoscience, and researchers have stopped presenting questionable claims for the sake of political approval.

For a pretty convincing theory on how the "Nightcrawlers" videos were made, look up "Captain Disillusion" on youtube. It's one of his older videos.
