The financial problem that led George to feel suicidal, thinking he’s worth more dead than alive was because his uncle lost the $8,000 cash deposit when he went to Potter’s bank. Watch the scene when Uncle Harry has the cash and is holding the newspaper with the article about George’s brother. The money and the newspaper accidentally get into Potter’s lap and Potter does not return what he knows does not belong to him!
