Jill Lepore asks the right questions, is true to an unbiased presentation of the who, what, where, and what are the why's that pepper the historical record–whether true or false. Every episode is refreshing, thought provoking and a genuine pleasure. It's great to be invited to reflect on the human condition, and learn about people who have significantly shaped experience of our world. All done without tiresome injections of opinion and reactionary blather. I also read "These Truths". Not only is the author a clear and even-handed presenter of history, I detect a poetic soul, showing a deeply held passion for this land. Though terribly flawed right from the outset, LePore's final brushstrokes for These Truths fill the canvas of American history with the light of hope. That right will overcome the violence and injustices that poison the high ideals for which we continue to strive.
Serendipity on a smartphone... I fell asleep listening to one of Jill Lepore's The Last Archive podcasts last night and woke up this morning to both birdsongs outside and the podcast player talking about... birdsongs and (sadly) declining bird populations... And paying respects to Rachel Carson and other bird lovers who have written about, recorded and counted birds. More serendipity: As I wrote this note, a neighbor's rooster began greeting the day. Thank you, Jill & friends.
Such a beautifully realised series, it covers so many different topics and potentially demoralising events with optimism and joyous curiosity I highly recommend listening
