Regarding your brief discussion of water-based vs solvent or oul-based finishes, I agree with the idea that on small projects oil based finishes are fine and perhaps preferred to water-based. I build and finish kitchen cabinetry. For this I use water-based finish. I prefer the water cleanup, not having to keep solvents around and not having my shop smell like lacquer thinner for weeks. I have even converted a local finisher to switch from solvent based lacquer to water based lacquer. All this finishing is sprayed as you might guess. However I have yet to able to apply this kind of water-based lacquer successfully with a brush or rag. I see so many people applying wipe on poly and pre-finishing before assembly that I think I'm going to have a go at it on my next project.
