That note on writing to your past and future self is so sweet and helpful thank you. Interestingly being disabled I’ve had to learn a lot of ways to make it easier for me to do things, and I realized this is useful for everyone! Which was a refreshing way to think about what I’m struggling through.
You trust the story when you get some answers that the questions are intentional so you can get invested in those questions, and the mystery is more appealing. I love the idea of small gaps which need to be resolved - you can perceive those, so it helps create tension.
The man in Black fled across the desert and the gunslinger pursued him.
Disagree with your view on heroes journey.
Singing Disney songs was the first thing I could do after my rather serious brain injury. Couldn't hold a simple conversation, couldn't even say my name, couldn't remember getting married(still can't) but I could sing UNDER THE SEA! across the intensive care unit. Word perfect. And now I find my best writing happens at 6am..... Go figure. Brain has been flipped perhaps.
I have wondered about these exact aspects. Great to hear about it from people who actually have to do it!
I think part of what was so great about this short story was that it was a good exploration of chronic pain and how it impacts your life. How much attention you pay to the smaller things, how nothing can take that pain away and you’re under it all the time, how you get familiar with the different presentations of the pain because you’ve been living with it so long or like our main character has clearly studied biology.
