Should you go visit him? Unequivocally, Unhesitatingly, my answer would be Yes. But you do you, I don’t live or walk in your shoes.
His argument comparing Settler of Catan to DND falls apart when you look at Munchkin or various expansions of MTG. In Magic you can buy a new set of cards and have special abilities no one else has by selling them to a player. So it works for the next company up. And some people might not understand the difference, in part because it was true in the Dragon Magazine days.
Not a fan of horror. I am Howardian through and through unlike the Lovecraftians. I have Played many horror games and this and any other system makes me say ‘meh’. You do you, but this is uninteresting to me. Sorry, to true heroes there is no where truly good to stab the knife.
Turning the spell IIRC has to deal with a ring of Spell Turning
I think the save vs the charm detection is a reminder that should have appeared in the PHB.
My understanding of Cyborg Commando was that it wasn’t something he could work on because he was keeping the company he had afloat by writing.
I think the thing that these old games had was with players being forced to deal with the spells they picked I like to have every good spell should have several uses from offensive to defensive to utility for the player.
Why not both?
Don’t try to do a history of how dnd was played. All of the tables are, were and should be different. Having just seen and responded to John Wick’s kinda bone headed assertion that “this was how we played the game back in the 80’s” and it was complete bull for how we played in my area. It’s all different and you should respect those differences.
And again DnD is pulling from other games (the stake paralysis is from VTM.
How did crosses show up in DnD? St Cuthbert. Come on people!!
Oh look, more people for Ben to interview!!
See, this section is another steaming pile of B*ll Sh*t from Gary especially things like the impression the spell system is ancient and none of the predecessors failed to note these issues with the spells is a severe disconnect for myself.
Oddly enough I think that since the Retarius is such an ancient long lasting trope that it shouldn’t be nerfed. But when the mechanics overthrow the story it’s so eeeecccchhhh for me while seeing that it left to reflect reality could be very bad.
Be careful what you wish for….
You should have Chris Holmes (the son of Holmes system author)on.
No Scott, nets and whips often introduced what we would call the stunned or paralyzed mechanics with no save or breakout rolls for a given amount of time with the biggest offender being the rope of entanglement which was basically the enchanted item equivalent of the reverse Knock spell…. It’s in the PHB in the weapons description section that for a smart fighter is their spell book equivalent.
Stupid Autocorrect it’s Turningdice.com
Uhm I have dice that can roll in different directions. Turning dice.com
I do have to say that David and Leigh Edings while having done bad things in the past and not to minimize that but on the other hand they have paid for their crime. In my view either people can learn and change and be reformed or the only alternative is to murder everyone that commits significant crimes. I don’t think that is a good answer either way but aiming for and allowing redemption is probably better.
