I think Thecla chose her own torture device by asking about it. The tour is a ploy to figure out what scares the client most.
You mentioned earlier that it seems like Severian doesn’t like Drotte very much, so the stuff about duties seems to me like Severian trying to be inconspicuous with Drotte so as to not be reported.
I was underwhelmed by BotNS. I listened to all of this hoping for an inspirational understanding. I found the podcast amusing, and it did highlight a few connections I missed, thank you for that. I won’t be re-reading though. It left me cold.
The description of the needler as part of the plot and characters is done similarly in BOTNS with terminus Est, vodalus’s flier and the pistol.
In effort to expedite a point: Can you keep your political opinions to yourselves? There is great pleasure to be had in listening to this podcast, but please stop with the constant reminders of your individual personal opinions. They are nauseatingly distracting from the subject matter. I understand this is your podcast, meaning your digressions are your own. This is a plea from a portion of your subscriber base. Talk about the subject and keep your own doctrines and to yourselves.
There is an epigram to the single volume printing of The Citadel of the Autarch. It is a quote from Rudyard Kipling. "At two o'clock in the morning, if you open your window and listen, you will hear the feet of the Wind that is going to call the sun. And the trees in the shadow rustle and the trees in the moonlight glisten, And the deep, dark night, you feel that the night is done."
Is it the Shrike of the Hyperion!
