It would make more sense to bypass the eyes entirely when making the simulation and go sstraight to the brain. This has been done in a very basic form. (basically just asking what color they are seeing. That would take Dale longer to become a reality couldn't even be a dream in 2011 and would require no a much more expensive rig than just a visor and gloves.
