It’s got so much worse. I have a friend who worked collection law and saw the paper terrorism first hand. A number of police have been shot by sovereign citizens (freemen) and vice versa. The internet is packed with videos of their insane traffic stops. I don’t live in the US but I was about 5 when I learned that when a cop pulls you over there, you do what the guy with the badge and gun says

Episode 72 / Marvin Heemeyer. I’ve listened to a few Swindled episodes now, and this is the first one where I have felt empathy towards the person. This was no different to school yard bullying - a group will push an individual to the brink of insanity, then act shocked when they snap. Thank you for including so much of Heemeyer’s manifesto reading too, it gave much insight into how out of touch with reality he was (talking with god, things are ’meant’ to be) but how he could still be very kind (’y’all have a good life’).
Don’t try to do anything with a loaded weapon except when hunting or on a range. If everybody cleared their weapon after shooting at targets or whatever, and field stripped and cleaned their weapon after every use- something they should be doing every time, anyway- then that weapon is as safe as it will ever be. Reassemble your weapon, but leave the bolt open. Drive it, unloaded, to your destination, be it the woods or the range, and load it at the bench just before you intend to use it.
