Blair’s proposed ID card, back in the day, was FAR from simple! It was full of things like retina scans and other tech that frequently misidentified people of colour and was going to cost more than a passport. What happens to the poor or homeless? If it was a very simple card, introduced gradually and sensitively, with low or no cost to the citizens there’d be fewer objections. But it will never be like that.
