I find this fascinating. The Vikings had even more impact upon the Old World than we knew. Supposedly I am descended from Somerled, first Lord of the Isles. His wife’s ancestry reflects all this history and is demonstrated in my ancient DNA.
Jesus, how is this nearly an hour long?! This could have been half an hour and it would have been too long
What a great episode! I thoroughly enjoyed this topic and content.
I love stories about Dragons and this episode was was entertaining and informative. Thanks so much.
Eleanor’s forced, fake laughter makes this episode borderline unlistenable.
Excellent...Helen Castor is brilliant
Loved this episode and the beautiful, haunting music! Check out Jean Ritchie, an American Appalachian folk singer who recorded many songs based on old English folk stories and ballads. Her song ”The House Carpenter” on the album Mountain Ballads is a version of the Demon Lover ballad covered in this episode.
I enjoyed this episode immensely. If I had the choice, I’d recommend a three episodes series in Edward I. One, pre-king. 33 years prior to becoming king, with such an extraordinary life that’d easily warrant one full episode. Second, earlier kinship. How he manages the transition into kinship. How things develop politically, but also within his family. Third, the latter years. How he shaped his kingdom, his grown children, the death of Eleanor, his second marriage until his death.
Recently come back from holiday in Carcassonne - lots of places around associated with the Cathars - interested in knowing more about them
Quite brilliant even by Matt’s usually very high standards. A simple “thank you” from me.
I wonder if all the eel eating is why hereditary cholesterol issues are in people with British ethnicity?
I appreciate the episode but yet again, seems a bit unfair to Richard... Henry had every advantage and every privilege, really. His father was the most powerful and wealthiest person in the land, and was there to teach him to boot.
