I think the Primarchs, before they got scattered, did have a purpose. Some seem predisposed to assist in helping the Emperor usher mankind on its evolutionary path. While the others seem more likely to act as the guardians of the entrances to the webway. Just because they conquer all of mankind doesn't mean the Eldar and the Orks are no longer a threat, let alone things like Enslavers that they knew where a threat. Once the Primarchs were scattered and tainted to differing degrees they no longer fit those roles and may have become temporary tools instead of the pillars of the future he intended. But the sheer amount of resources and effort put into the Primarch project seem to indicate a desire for something permanent versus temporary. Keep up the great work guys.
