I haven't been to Mt Tai but I have climbed one of the other holy mountains in China, Hua Shan. It was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life! Straggly bits of rope and vertical cliffs with random steps cut into it. Hilarious long (very long) drop toilets - slip and you'd be a goner! It was a knackering climb, and every so often a local would zip past with a fridge on his back, delivering stuff to the hotel on the peak... It was a magical place, absolutely stunning views all the way around. I'm sure Tai Shan is just as spectacular.
