EP. 67) âBHM MOVIE REVIEW: DO THE RIGHT THING - DID ANYONE?â Weâll be discussing the Spike Lee-directed classic Do The Right Thing, and asking the question â did anyone do the right Thing?Â
Do The Right Thing put the racial tensions and the complexities of multiculturalism and communication on front street! One of the earliest films of our generation that we can recall doing so.
The film expertly tackles nuanced, touchy topics like police brutality, racial profiling, and black power in a manner that feels real and relevant. Itâs no surprise then that it has stood the test of time and made a lasting impression on audiences since its release in 1989.Â
fire.Â
So now, letâs tackle our question â did anyone do the right thing? Omar feels the Mayor was the lone character in the film that did but some could find his flaws as well. Each character had different and often conflicting motivations, making it impossible to answer this question definitively. What we all can agree on is that nobody in the film is without fault. We can observe how each characterâs decisions â no matter how good their intentions â escalate the already tense situation.Â
Do The Right Thing is an excellent example of how difficult conversations about race can be, but also how important it is to engage in them. Its message remains as relevant today as it was 30 years ago, and we invite you to join us in discussing the complex issues raised by this classic film.Â
