LSU DT Maason Smith suspended one game by the NCAA, OUT vs Florida State

LSU football defensive tackle Maason Smith will not be available Week 1 vs. Florida State as he has been suspended for one game by the NCAA for receiving "impermissible benefits" stemming from a July 2021 autograph signing incident involving Smith and former LSU WR Kayshon Boutte. While "impermissible benefits" seems like a foreign term in the NIL era, the autograph signings occurred mere weeks before college athletes were able to benefit from the names, images, and likenesses.

So where does LSU go from here? LSU and the Florida State Seminoles enter this game very evenly matched: two Heisman-caliber quarterbacks with much improved offensive lines, standout defensive players and each team returns a hefty amount of production from last season. Also, each team has incredibly high expectations; they both enter this matchup as top-ten teams with College Football Playoff hopes.
