Within moments of opening the Bank of America branch on Laurel Canyon Boulevard in North Hollywood, California on the morning of February 28th, 1997, the staff’s worst fears were realized. Two men, later identified as Larry Phillips Jr. and Emil Matasareanu, entered the bank wearing highly customized body armor. The men were armed with automatic weapons and over 3,000 rounds of ammunition. These were no ordinary thieves, and they were about to turn the streets of Los Angeles into a war zone, and in doing so, change American policing forever. The infamous shootout that ensued would leave two people dead, and numerous others badly injured.
