Attack of the Killer Soundtrack 60
This episode we're joined by composers Erich Stem and David Neville to play and discuss all the 2019 Oscar nominees for both Best Original Song and Best Original Score.
And while we kindle our memories of the intellectual components of some of our favorite films, we also cover… Beyoncé, Cats, The Oath, a classically trained cellist from Iceland, Call of Duty, that kind of exaggerated sound, Andrew Lloyd Webber, nostalgia and suicide, sounds versus themes, The Lion King, taiko drum score, various knobs, unfortunate and sad romantic, Billy Joel, Thom Yorke, pulsating synthesizers, minor third was heavily used, sophisticated electronic sounds, Hans Zimmer, classically-trained flautist, it’s an interesting parallel between him and Beethoven, the culture of myth-making, Stewart Copeland, this composer really broke out and did something quite new… with a movie, Taylor Swift, obsessed with sound, Madonna, a very dry recording, foreshadowing versus callbacks, adding some flavor to the film, follow characters by subtly changing sounds, drone sounds and single pitch noises, make grandiose, obligated to follow the story or at least the world in which they created, this beautiful musical universe, techniques that you hear in other movies and becoming a dentist.
“...it’s a unique challenge to try to write a score or write songs that are different enough to not seem like your being lazy, but also the same enough… to not completely throw everyone off.”
