Redistricting Commission Failure - A constitutional crisis is looming in Ohio
The Ohio Supreme Court judged the Ohio Legislature and Congressional maps to be unconstitutional. The maps were sent back to the Redistricting Commission, a first-time concept on how Ohio redraws its map after the 10-year census. In the past, the Apportionment Board was made up of the Governor, Secretary of State, Auditor, Speaker of the Ohio House, Senate President, and the minority leaders in both chambers. After a ballot measure that passed in 2015, the district lines are now drawn by a Redistricting Commission with other guidelines. If the commission unanimously votes to approve the maps, they will be 10-year maps. If the minority members object to the maps, they are to be 4-year maps and reviewed again in four years. What has happened is that the Democrats sued and brought their complaint to the Ohio Supreme Court. Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor broke from her fellow Republicans on the bench and joined the Democrats in refusing the maps. According to legal experts, there is no recourse for the Republicans to appeal to the federal courts. If they dig in their heels, the Democrats could file suit again, sending it back to the court, creating a revolving door. Joining me on the program to discuss this all-important issue is Rob Walgate from the American Policy Roundtable. Tune in and tell a friend.
