This episode is from the Archive of What's the 411? with Sharon Kay. It was recorded from my live show on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 4:00 pm on WFSK JAZZY 88 at Fisk University. The guest was former Four-time D.C. Mayor, and Ward 8 City Councilman, Marion S. Barry, Jr.
Many don't know that Barry began his civil rights legacy in Nashville as a student at Fisk University, organizing the city's sit-in movement to end racial segregation.
Barry earned a master's degree in chemistry from Fisk University in 1960 and organized the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee there, later becoming its first national chairman.
Mayor Marion Barry is arrested and charged with drug possession and the use of crack cocaine in 1990. In September 1991, he was sentenced to six months in prison for possession of crack cocaine. After serving his sentence, Barry, claiming to have overcome his “personal adversities,” reentered D.C. politics.
He transitioned on November 23, 2014 at the age of 74.
