Allia Mohamed - Openigloo

Allia Mohamed is the co-founder and CEO of Openigloo, a website and app that connects renters with highly-rated landlords. Launched in 2020, Openigloo is on a mission to bring transparency to rental markets and support tenants throughout their housing journey.

The fast growing startup combines vetted reviews from residents and public records to give NYC apartment hunters vital intel such as how much rents went up, heating complaints, and bedbug violations Like "Yelp for renters," but with carefully moderated and monitored resident reviews, Openigloo has more than 200,000 users and 20,000-plus reviews across 15,000 buildings in New York. Openigloo has attracted a diverse group of global technology professionals to its growing team of eight. 

Allia’s idea for Openigloo was born as a frustrated renter having challenges finding the right apartment and dealing with housing problems that went unsolved (heating and water issues, smoke, etc.). A common frustration many renters face in NYC and around the country.

Instead of racing from apartment to apartment and making speed and price the priority, she focused on research and using public housing data and renters’ feedback to find her next, perfect apartment.

"I was standing outside of buildings talking to people walking in and out to ask them, 'How do you like living here?'" Mohamed, who started to envision a website that made this information easily accessible, said. "Could we crowdsource this data? Could we get people to share their experiences and combine it with city data to provide this background?"

Allia was named one of the top rising stars in real estate by Insider and Openigloo is one of the Top 100 apps in the Lifestyle Chart in App Store!

Prior to founding Openigloo, Allia was a Venture Capitalist at Trend Forward Capital where she advised  the firm’s global portfolio companies on their growth strategies. Prior to that, she worked in Capital Markets on Wall Street at Scotiabank and Seven Seas Capital. Allia holds degrees from Columbia and the Canadian business university Dalhousie.
