Do you think of yourself as a good person? How about money driven?
I’ve found that most people who think of themselves as “good people” Don’t think of themselves as money driven.
But most of them are.
You see a lot of “good people” are suffering in jobs that make them miserable. But when I ask them why they won’t leave, 9 out of 10 times they say because of the money.
So essentially they are sacrificing their well-being, health, their relationships, their ethics, and their integrity for “the money.”
I’m no one to judge here. I’ve been there, done that.
I worked myself straight into burnout. At one point I had 5 jobs. I went to work with 102-degree fevers and feeling like death. And missed countless weddings and special events. Even though relationships were a top priority for me.
Ultimately, I did it all for the money. I did it for safety. I did it to survive.
I was so afraid there wouldn’t be enough. Or that someone would fire me if I took a day off. Even though I was the hardest worker at the company. I was afraid the company would go under, and then I wouldn’t have a job. (This happened anyway, because my stupid boss wouldn’t let me fix anything.)
I did this because I was forever in survival mode. So I sold my health and relationships for the security of money and a job. And to be honest, even with all that sacrifice, I never had enough to feel truly safe. I never had enough to feel like I could leave my job and find one I actually liked.
When I had 5 jobs, I did the uncomfortable thing and I left one of them. So I’d have more time to work on a project that was meaningful to me. But I never worked on it. I just filled that time with more work from the other jobs, Netflix binges, or a good whisky night that trashed my productivity the next day.
And I know I’m not the only one. One of my past podcast guests got on a plane 8 months into a difficult pregnancy so she wouldn’t lose a big commission. And as a result, she went into preterm labor (everything worked out okay).
But she realized that she’d risked the health of her child for “the money.”
The thing is, this kind of behavior happens because you feel powerless in survival mode. But you’re not–powerless.
You can create a good life where you don’t have to sacrifice the things that are important to you for your job, security, and “the money.” You can even do it without leaving your current job!
One thing that’ll help you is to check out this week’s podcast episode. This is the third episode of the archetype series, and Carolyn Wallace and I will talk about the prostitute archetype. The “prostitute” is the one who sacrifices their morals, ideals, integrity, people pleases, and yes sometimes their body for the sake of “survival.” We’ve all dipped into this behavior at some point or another in our lives, but if you’re stuck there, you’re going to need a roadmap out. So check out this episode to find out how you can break free from this pattern.
