Psalm 24 (NIV)
Of David. A psalm.
1 The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; 2 for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters. 3 Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? 4 The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god. 5 They will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God their Savior. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, God of Jacob. 7 Lift up your heads, you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 10 Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty— he is the King of glory.
What modern idols tempt us to live for them?
Everlasting God, You have created all things and You are worthy of praise. There is nothing in this world that You have not made or allowed to happen. Why then are we so easily distracted by temptations and enticements that take our focus off You. We put our trust in obtaining greater power, wider acceptance, influential careers, flashy toys, bigger houses, faster cars, financial stability and popular friends to make us happy. But instead our hearts are empty, tired and we become slaves to their seductive power. Lord forgive us. All these things are temporary and insignificant compared to the power, glory, satisfaction and joy that we receive from You. Lord help me to recognize when people, places, things or activities become idols in my heart. Clean my heart by helping me to repent and accept Your forgiveness. Allow me to have a pure heart focused on Your eternal love and mercy. You are the Lord God, who saves, blesses and will reward those who worships and serves You. You are my Lord, a strong and mighty warrior and a Glorious King. You are all powerful and loving and a Glorious King. Let me worship and praise You, my Glorious King! Amen
