Moment of Meditation: Making Disciples (Matthew 28:19-20)
''Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you (Matthew 28:19-20).''
A renewed focus on discipleship seems to come along to the Church every couple of years. All kinds of different programs are put forward to help in the discipleship process.
But what does Jesus say about discipleship? What program would He use? The same one He gives right before He ascends into Heaven. Make disciples by Baptism and teaching.
Baptism is how you enter the one holy, catholic and apostolic Church. According to Christ's command, this can be done for infants and for adults. He tells Christians to make disciples by baptizing all nations. He doesn't give a minimum age.
He also doesn't give a minimum age for Christian teaching. Many people don't bring their small children to worship or Sunday School because they believe they're not old enough to learn anything.
But sociologists have released study after study explaining that the ripe age for children to learn is from two to five years of age. Their minds are absorbent sponges during these years. They observe and absorb everything around them. Including whether their parents show them that worshipping God is important.
What have you taught your children? Or your grandchildren? Is worship important for you? If not, why would you think it would be important to them? We're losing the discipleship battle with our children. They're becoming more disciples of SpongeBob instead of Jesus. What can we do to stop this? Teach. If necessary, we need to use our words. But we definitely need to '''SHOW''' our children who we should be discipling after. Amen.
