William Goebel was already dying from multiple gunshot wounds when he was sworn in as Governor of Kentucky on January 31, 1900. Outside the Capital Hotel, militia prepared for war, faithful voters prayed for good news, and Kentucky's OTHER governor could only hope the backlash wouldn't fall on him.
How did we get here? Political infighting turned violent attacks, maybe-duels, and one man's Hamilton-esque ambition that brought him to the state's highest office — if only for three days.
