Happy Tuesday, pals.
We start off this week with a chat about the earthquake and riots that took over Melbourne last week! Who would’ve thought that 2021 could get any weirder??
Then some pop culture popcorn: the Internet’s strangest pairing, Grimes and Elon Musk, have “semi-separated” after three years and Chris Pratt is cast as Mario in the new Super Mario Bros movie. It sparks a discussion around our pop culture “hate-boners”.
You’ve probably heard about the tragic case of Gabby Petito over the last few weeks. Gabby was a 22 year old micro-influencer who went missing while on a trip with her fiance Brian Laundrie.
Earlier this month, Brian returned home in their van… alone. Now, Gabby’s body has been found in a national park and Brian has also been reported missing.
In this segment, we go over a brief timeline of the case and discuss a few topics that it’s brought up including: the proliferation of social media in missing person cases, why our true crime obsession may be harming people and Missing White Woman syndrome.
We reference this New York Times article as well as this piece from The Cut and an article on online detectives by Vanity Fair.
Next up it’s recommendation time. Maggie escapes in a fantasy novel by V.E. Schwab called The Invisible Life Of Addie LaRue while Jas recommends a podcast called The Dropout which looks at the rise and fall of fraudster Elizabeth Holmes.
Ta-ta for now.
