Niccolò Machiavelli was an Italian philosopher and political thinker. In his book, The Prince, Machiavelli discusses the methods to acquire power and keep it. He says that it is impossible to an effective leader and at the same time, be a good person. Because to be effective, one may need to take dark routes and rely on cruel tactics. Its better for a leader to be feared than admired and respected, as fear gets the work done which admiration might not. These weren't his views on power, rather his observation of the people who were more powerful and effective than him.
