We both loved reading growing up and have many books that really gained our attention and interest, but there were also many books with which we struggled getting through just a couple of pages. Something we’ve discovered and learned with our own children is that they will pay so much more attention and read so much more if we just give them books on subjects they actually enjoy as opposed to subjects we think they should learn about. We’ve also discovered that if you can entice the oldest child to enjoy reading or doing something productive, the younger ones will follow his or her example.

“When the older child sits down and does anything, the younger ones want to do it too, and we notice 2 things. One is when he sits down and reads, the others will just pick up a book and sit down and pretend that they’re reading or just look at the pictures, but they want to be seen to do the same thing. And the other thing is that with writing, which is kind of similar to reading. I get Patty to do a lot of journaling because he’s able to do it, but I give the others a journal book and they scribble in it.” 5:03
