Episode 82 of The Big Rhetorical Podcast features an interview with Dr. M. Elizabeth Thorpe. M. Elizbeth Thorpe was raised in various west Texas towns. As a child of an oil field rough neck and a public-school teacher, she an her family followed the booms and busts of the oil industry throughout west Texas until settling in the Permian Basin when she was a teenager. Then she went to Baylor University where she majored in English. She took two years off, then got her M.A. in English from Texas A&M University. Afterward, she received her PhD in Rhetoric and Public Affairs from the Communication department at Texas A&M. After school, she moved to the Rochester, NY area for a Visiting Assistant Professor job, and within two years had secured a tenure track position at SUNY Brockport. She is now an Associate Professor focusing on constitutive rhetoric, legal rhetoric, and free speech. She teaches classes in protest, political rhetoric, propaganda, and the first amendment.
