This morning in I read these words in the book of Ezekiel 7:6, "An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come." Though this had to do with the nation of Israel, my eyes zeroed in on the words regarding there being "an end." In fact, five times it is declared "an end is come." It struck me that there is an end to all things and everything. I thought about ancient civilizations that no longer exist because an end came for them. There have been nations that once stood as great earthly mountains that were overthrown. An end came for them. They no longer exist. There have been great rulers and kings, whose end came and they no longer exist. As well as individuals who once lived and whether good or bad, and end came for their earthly mortal existence.
There are people everyday making their plans for something a year or decades from now, even tomorrow, and their end will suddenly come. Believers lightly toss out this saying, "tomorrow is promised unto no man." Yet there is nothing that speaks or shows that they believe it. What would happen if we began to live as though we can be called home at any time? There are people everyday that are entering into eternity and were not prepared. They took everything for granted. They died, and in the eternal state everything they ever said and did, is now and forever sealed. "The dead praise not the Lord, nor any that go down into silence."
This is not a game. How we are living our lives is going ahead of us into heaven being recorded. This is not a call to live in a some morbidity of a religious, joyless state. Rather it is a question proposed to you today that must be taken into serious consideration. Are you ready to enter into eternity at a moment's notice? What are you prepared to carry over the water's edge? The edge of eternity? There is an expected end for the righteous. In Ecclesiastes 11:3 it says, "... and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be." Meaning, what we are when we die, the state and condition we are in, is what we will be forever. Like molten iron poured into mold and cooled.
"Death comes to the ungodly man as a penal infliction, but to the righteous as a summons to his Father's palace. To the sinner it is an execution, to the saint an undressing from his sins and infirmities. Death to the wicked is the King of terrors. Death to the saint is the end of terrors, the commencement of glory." Charles Spurgeon
