EP240 Weekend Workshop: How To Be A Brilliant Podcast Host | Tiff Cook
Well, the debut Weekend Workshop episode last week was a hit (phew, thank #%@$ for that hey). And from it came a few points I thought were worth covering in this weeks episode, so here I am giving my two cents worth (for what it's worth) on how to be a brilliant podcast host and interviewer.
Now the imposter-syndrome voice in my head wishes to announce that I'm no expert in the space of interviewing and I still very much have my L plates on. The voice I prefer to listen to is reminding me that I have performed almost quarter of a million interviews/conversations in under a year and a half, co-hosted an additional couple of hundred with a front row seat to watch interviewing first hand and further to that, I've been on quite a number of other peoples podcasts where I have experienced hosting on the flip side. So let's acknowledge that perhaps I've learned and experienced a thing or two worth hearing.
You can take a great conversationalist and sit them in front of a microphone and watch the ground crumble beneath their feet as they struggle to string their words together in their usual, listenable manner. It's the job of a host/interviewer to create the atmosphere, energy, flow and safe space for the guest to perform at their peak.
I've been in interviews where the connection between myself as the guest and the host has been difficult to maintain as they focus on their 'producer' roles or internally fuss over their next question - 'Hey bro, listen up I'm answering your last question'.
Some guests require you to pivot, change tact and adapt on the fly to ensure you're going to end up with an hour of engaging banter for your listeners. An awareness on what sets us up for success as a host will reduce the likelihood of you spending an hour chatting with someone whilst thinking of excuses you can use to not publish the episode.
With zero experience when I started and as of today 240 episodes under my belt I'm thrilled to say that I have never had to turf an episode. So here's some of the things that made that a reality for me.
