OPC 048: Inner Child Healing and Learning to Reparent Ourselves
As children, we’re born without any means to defend ourselves. Totally dependent on our parents for love, acceptance and shelter, there can be times when our parents fail to provide emotional, psychological, and physical shelter required. This can cause us to be stuck in a trauma-response for years to come with a wounded-inner child:
You often have to guess at what “normal” is, because it doesn’t feel safe to trust.
You pose the risk of getting hurt when you get close to someone, so you back away.
For years we felt smaller than, learning to mitigate our own needs to compensate for our low self-esteem. We came to reject the part of us that needed love, trust, and understanding instead became a person who someone else wanted us to be.
As adults, we cannot return to our childhood and begin again. So, often, we need to reparent ourselves. A life skill never taught, reparenting means giving yourself what you didn’t receive from childhood and giving your wounded inner child the love, respect, and dignity you deserved when you were young.
In this week’s Recovery Coaching call, the group helped Leo, Jess, and Jen. All struggling with trust, fear, and taking on a new venture in their lives, they all must learn to reparent themselves to understand themselves on a deeper level so they can ultimately find love, joy, and passion.
