In 1587, England wanted to start a new phase of colonization in North America by establishing their first permanent colony: a group of over 115 people who would have children and live on the continent for the rest of their lives. When they arrived on Roanoke Island — what is now part of North Carolina — conditions were worse than the group expected, and they sent their leader John White back to England for supplies.
What was supposed to be a six-month journey at most turned into three years. When White finally returned to the island, the colonists (including his wife, daughter, and granddaughter) were nowhere to be found. Instead, when wondering the island and the empty settlement, White came across a word carved into a post: CROATOAN.
In this episode, we talk about what CROATOAN means and the wide-ranging theories of what happened to the Roanoke colonists.
But first, Zoey gives Robin a southern geography quiz — once again proving that neither host has ever looked at a map.
