Ep.44 The Path Less Traveled | Breaking Away from Pharmaceuticals
Dr. Duncan McCollum is committed to remaining healthy and active well into his 90’s and beyond, and he wants to make sure you have the same tools and knowledge to do the same.
After witnessing in his patients the shortcomings of relying on pharmaceuticals to create health, he knows that this well-traveled path doesn’t lead to the results people think it will. America makes up 4% of the world’s population, and yet it consumes more than 50% of all the pharmaceuticals produced worldwide. In other words, Americans take the most drugs in the entire world. Yet somehow we are rated 47th in the world for health. Something isn’t right here. This statistic makes it clear that taking pharmaceutical drugs isn’t creating healthier people.
In response, Dr. McCollum suggests that the path less traveled may actually turn out to be the healthiest. On this path, he recommends taking pharmaceutical drugs only when necessary, and minimizing drug use when more holistic alternatives are available that can bring the same desired results, if not better.
It is also important to avoid interfering with the body’s ability to heal itself. There are three main types of interference that get in the way of our health: physical (e.g. the nervous system), chemical (e.g. toxins), and mental/emotional (e.g. environmental stressors). In his experience, Dr. McCollum has observed that chemicals and toxins have some of the greatest consequences on our health.
