87. Restoring Deliverance To Discipleship with Doug Balzer

Welcome to episode #87!

In this episode, Matt and Braden interview author, speaker and director of reKindle.tv, Doug Blazer. They discuss with Doug a biblical understanding of deliverance ministry (getting rid of demonic activity), and why it matters for all of us!

We live in a physical and a spiritual reality
Often we are only focused on the physical reality of our world and lives because it is what we see and can touch. However we are made up of a physical body, but also a soul (our emotions, mind, will) and our spirit (the eternal part of what makes us, "us"). Having that understanding helps us realize that we face physical challenges in life but also spiritual ones. Our enemy can attack us in numerous ways including spiritually. Satan is described by Peter in the Bible  (1 Peter 5:8) as a roaring lion, and Peter warns us to "Be alert and of sober mind. ... Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. This isn't meant to scare us, but make us aware that we do have an adversary, that there is good and evil, and that Jesus came to set us free!

Jesus came to set us free!
One of the ways that Jesus sets us free is in areas we are "demonized", or in other words, areas that the enemy has a foothold in our lives. It could be seen in areas of shame, ongoing negative thoughts, angry outbursts, or in areas of sexual addiction. That isn't to say those things always have a demonic catalyst, but that they could, and that with Jesus, we can have freedom. It takes a choice on our part to recognize those areas, confess our complicity in them, rebuking the enemies presence in those specific areas, and then asking Jesus to enter into those parts of our lives.

Deliverance is something we all need to engage with!
We all face spiritual challenges in life, and for those who follow Jesus it is no different. We all have aspects of demonic activity in our lives because we have an enemy of our soul at work, but don't despair! We have a good God who loves us and wants us to live in the fullness of his presence. With his power acting in us and through us, we have the ability in Jesus to boot out all demonic activity in our lives and to experience a greater degree of intimacy with Jesus as a result. It also frees us up to help others and to be more free in all aspects of our lives. That is when we really see God light up the dark!!
