Think of earth as a mirror of heaven. Only think of heaven as spiritual, earth as temporal, much like our body which has a spiritual component and a physical component, both creating a single soul. Earth is an extension of heaven, and if you can imagine the earth in its glorified state, you can imagine what heaven is like.
John the Revelator saw the earth in its glorified state:
1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
...
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away....
7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. (Revelation 21:1-7)
The prophet Daniel also saw those who live in the Holy City:
2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. (Daniel 12:2-3)
Everything we do on earth is recorded in heaven. As spirits in heaven, before coming to earth, we did not have the chances of service that we have on earth; therefore, earth life was necessary. Everything we do here is recorded:
2 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
(Revelation 20:12-13)
Those who live only for themselves on earth negate the purpose of coming to earth. Daniel said that they “shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. But notice that those who “turn many to righteousness” shall shine as the brightness of the firmament. And those whom they save shall be “as the stars for ever and ever.” Imagine their gratitude in heaven toward those who brought the gospel to them. Now consider yourself as a servant of God, an angel, if you will, sent from heaven into the Lord’s vineyard. What you do in that vineyard matters because it determines your judgment.
Paul said,
13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. (1 Corinthians 13:12-13)
James said, “Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.” (James 5:20)
When asked by the lawyer “which is the great commandment in the law?’ the Savior responded:
37 Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (Matthew 22:37-40)
If God notices those who need to be nurtured, is it not reasonable to assume that he will be with those who nurture for they are his angels? He will bless his servants.
What better time than the season when we celebrate the birth of Christ is there to serve our fellowman. Christ spent his entire life serving others, and it was only for us that he suffered for our sins in Gethsemane and died on the cross of Calvary. We serve God by serving others.
