Episode 87: Noor Ghazal Aswad (Emerging Scholar Series)
Episode 87 of The Big Rhetorical Podcast in another in entry in our Emerging Scholar Series and features a discussion with Noor Ghazal Aswad. Noor Ghazal Aswad is a doctoral candidate at the University of Memphis. Her research explores the forms of persuasion that mediate and situate broader ideological discourses surrounding refugees and immigrants and vulnerable others. Her dissertation “Syria as a litmus test: Towards a telos of solidarity” puts forth the Syrian revolution as a liberatory moment where revolutionaries rose from under an authoritarian regime’s historic eclipse. Noor is motivated by the conviction that we must centralize the voices of Syrians themselves as a source of epistemological agency and not just as “refugee figures” confined to undesirable humanitarian subjects or apolitical & “third persons” in search of a homeland. Her work has been published in Rhetoric & Public Affairs and Critical Studies in Media Communication, among others.
